National Voters’ Day is observed   in India on January 25 every year to encourage the country’s voters to participate in the elections. This year it is being celebrated for the 14th time. In India's vibrant democracy, where every vote is a testimony to the aspirations and choices of the people, National Voters’ Day holds a special place. India is the largest democracy in the world, the importance of every vote in India cannot be overemphasised. This day celebrates public awareness and the immense power other electorate.

Overview of National Voters' Day

National Voters’ Day was launched in 2011 by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to address a growing concern. The then Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Ambika Soni, pointed out the growing apathy among new voters, especially those who had recently turned 18, to register themselves in the electoral rolls. As a result, the government, led by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, approved a proposal by the Law Ministry to launch a campaign to address this problem. The date, January 25, was chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the founding of the ECI in 1950 and to symbolize a renewed commitment to democratic participation.
