Overview
of National Voters' Day
National
Voters’ Day was launched in 2011 by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to
address a growing concern. The then Minister of Information and Broadcasting,
Ambika Soni, pointed out the growing apathy among new voters, especially those
who had recently turned 18, to register themselves in the electoral rolls. As a
result, the government, led by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, approved a
proposal by the Law Ministry to launch a campaign to address this problem. The
date, January 25, was chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the founding
of the ECI in 1950 and to symbolize a renewed commitment to democratic
participation.
