 About Silamabam ( Martial Art)

Silambam is a traditional martial art of Tamils. Karate and Kung Fu originated from Silambam and Kalari. This name reflects the art’s historical significance, where sticks were used both as weapons and as tools for hunting in hilly placesSilambam is a traditional martial art form that focuses on the use of sticks as weapons and is also known for its elaborate and rhythmic movements. Birds and animals leave the place after hearing the sound of the cymbal.

Sage Agathiya, who lived 2500 years ago and is closely associated with the ancient Sangam period of Tamil history, which existed between 300 BC and 300 AD mentions Silamba as one of the 64 arts. There are references in the Tamil literature about the Cilambam, especially in the Cilappathikaram, that the drum, knife, etc. for playing the Cilambam were sold in a shop and foreigners eagerly bought them. The ancient city of Madurai became the focal point of the spread of cymbals.

It has called it as another name of Silambattam and Silambam but also traditionally practised by the Tamil community of Sri Lanka and Malaysia. It is also the oldest traditional martial art in the world.

 Black days of Silambam

The valiant Tamil kings of the time, Dheeran Chinnamalai, Puli Thevar, Veerapandiya Kattabomman and Maruthu Pandiyar (1760–1799), had trained entire armies in Silamabm and relied mainly on their Silambam skills to wage war against the British army. This army was the reason why the British army found it difficult to fight against them. Indian martial arts suffered a decline after the British colonists banned Silambam along with various other systems. They also introduced modern western military training that favoured firearms over traditional weapons. During this time, silambam was more widely used in Southeast Asia than in its native India, where it was banned by the British rulers at the end of the 18th century.
